The Faithful Fools and Nicaragua

I do it for the love of the art”, responded Heidi Francis Meza, founder and director of St. Francis of Assisi School in Nicaragua, when we acknowledged the energy and commitment required of her to create and sustain a primary school.

Heidi is an “artist”. She gives expression to her vision of educating children. Heidi, and her sister Graciela provide an opportunity to study within the barrio that is filled with economic and human struggle. Water seldom comes through the pipes and there are long rationed hours without electricity. Heidi, together with her husband and son live in the barrio.

There is a large doorway in a cinderblock wall that leads from the school into the Fool’s Court (La Corte de los/las Bufones). Children come to “La Corte” to read books and to learn to play the recorder in a music program guided by Max Jerez, Heidi’s husband.

Manuel Perez invites youth to use it as a safe and pleasant place to be together. Mercedes Gonzales faithfully maintains “La Corte” for the many community groups that use it. She, together with other women, organizes people to learn about consumer rights and critical issues, like the privatization of water, or domestic violence. She has organized an early childhood development program for teenage girls and women who are pregnant or breast-feeding.

They learn from the beginning that attention to a child’s physical and emotional development requires active attention. The women learn about nutrition for them and their children. They receive classes on how to cook with soybeans, extracting the milk and then using the remaining ingredients to enrich their traditional foods. They learn to do exercises with their children to facilitate the development of muscles, motor skills and nervous system. Mothers and children learn to play together. 

Through annual trips Faithful Fools from the U.S. and from the urban and rural areas of Nicaragua learn from one another. Together we reflect on what we are witnessing and experiencing in our own communities, countries and throughout the world. Questions arise like, “What is poor?”

As a global community of Faithful Fools we collaborate to sustain the school and the ministries within the Fool’s Court in Nicaragua.

Heidi, Max, Manuel and Mercedez are 4 of 15 new applicants to become Franciscan Associates of the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, MN. Sisters Carmen Barsody and Susan Knutson work with Faithful Fools in San Francisco, California.

Las Bufones y Nicaragua

[about the Fools]

“Yo lo hago por el amor al arte”, dijo Heidi Francis Meza, fundadora y directora del Colegio San Francisco de Asís en Managua, Nicaragua, cuando reconocemos su energía y compromiso requeridos para crear y sostener una escuela primaria. Heidi es una “artista”. Ella da expresión a su visión de educar a niños y niñas. Heidi, y su hermana Graciela proveen una oportunidad para estudiar en medio de un barrio lleno de lucha económica y humana. Llega muy poca agua por tubería y sufren de muchas horas sin luz.

Heidi, su esposo e hijo vive en este barrio.

Hay una puerta en la pared de bloques de concreto que lleva del colegio hacia La Corte de los/las bufones. Niños y niñas lleguen a La Corte para leer libros y aprender a tocar flauta en un programa de música guiado por Máximo Jerez, el esposo de Heidi. Manuel Pérez invita a los jóvenes a usar La Corte para estar juntos/as en un lugar seguro y un ambiente agradable. Mercedes Gonzáles da mantenimiento a La Corte para los grupos de la comunidad que la utilizan. Ella, junto con otras mujeres, organizan a la gente para aprender de sus derechos de consumidores y otros asuntos como la privatización del agua o la violencia doméstica. Ella ha organizada un programa de desarrollo temprano para adolescentes y mujeres embarazadas y lactantes. Ellas aprenden que desde el comienzo el desarrollo físico y emocional, requiere atención activa. Las mujeres aprenden sobre nutrición para ellas y sus niños/as. Reciben clases de cómo cocinar con soya, extrayendo la leche y usando la masa para enriquecer con proteína su comida tradicional. Ellas aprenden cómo hacer ejercicios con sus niños/as para facilitar el desarrollo de sus músculos, habilidades motoras y del sistema nervioso. Madres y niños/as juegan juntas/os.

A través de viajes anuales, los Bufones Fieles de Estados Unidos y de áreas rurales y urbanas en Nicaragua, aprendemos unos de otros. Juntos reflexionamos sobre lo que estamos viendo y experimentando en nuestras comunidades, países y en el mundo entero. Surgen preguntas como ¿qué es la pobreza?

Como una comunidad global de Bufones Fieles, colaboramos en sostener el colegio y los ministerios dentro de La Corte de los/las Bufones en Nicaragua. Heidi, Max, Manuel y Mercedes son 4 de los/las 15 nuevos candidatos para ser Asociados/as Franciscanos/as de las Hermanas Franciscanas de Little Falls, MN.
