Supporting an After-School Program

The Faithful Fools are proud to be the original co-sponsors of the Up On Top After-School Program.  The Program offers licensed after-school child care for the Tenderloin and Western Addition community at no cost to the participants' families.
Up On Top provides innovative programming designed to promote comprehensive youth development. It serves 24 children in grades kindergarten through third who live in the Tenderloin and Western Addition Neighborhoods in San Francisco and whose families qualify for low-income status.

Up On Top is housed at the Unitarian Universalist Center at Franklin and Geary, and the First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco was another original co-sponsors.  Up On Top has been an independent 501 (c) (3) charity since 2003.

Up On Top has partnered with John Swett Elementary School because this school presents the most need in the neighborhood. Neither the school, San Francisco Unified School District, nor other community agencies offers any after-school programs for the 300+ students attending John Swett.

Although most families at the school qualify for the free- or reduced-cost lunch program, none of the families who registered for Up On Top are receiving state or local child care subsidies. They meet eligibility requirements, but the programs are not adequately funded to provide the money.  Up On Top has stepped in with no-cost after-school child care.

Program focus includes homework support, literacy curriculum, thematic group activities, field trips, free play, and community service projects.
